Looking for something satisfying, fast, and full of flavour? This beef bowl hits all the marks. We added peas for colour and sweetness, and upgraded the umami with a spoonful of miso.

It’s a weeknight go-to that feels like takeout without the processed ingredients or excess saturated fats.

By using lean beef, natural seasonings, and nutrient-rich add-ins like peas and miso, this bowl delivers flavour and nourishment in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 450g lean ground beef

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 tsp minced ginger

  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp honey

  • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional, for flavour)

  • 1 cup frozen peas

  • 1–2 tbsp miso paste (white or red)

  • Cooked rice, to serve (~1½ cups per serving)

Method

  1. Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned, about 5 minutes.

  2. Add the onions, garlic, and ginger, and cook for another 2–3 minutes until the onions are soft.

  3. Stir in soy sauce, honey, and red pepper flakes. Simmer for 2–3 minutes to allow the flavours to meld.

  4. Add peas and cook for 1–2 minutes until heated through.

  5. Remove from heat. Mix miso paste with 2 tablespoons of warm liquid from the pan (or water) until smooth. Stir into the beef mixture.

  6. Drizzle with sesame oil, if using. Serve over rice with your favourite toppings.
